How Can Sport Specific Training Increase My
Serve Speed and Help to Prevent Injuries?
by Jamie F. Glick, MS, PT
Tennis is a game that can be played all year round, indoors and outdoors.
Players need to be in top shape to play at their best. Participants of all
skill levels – beginners, high school competitors and professional
athletes – need to have their musculoskeletal system working optimally in
order to perform better. Sport specific rehabilitation is a
way to fine tune your biomechanics and improve your strength where it
counts – on the tennis court. It
starts with a detailed evaluation by a physical therapist of the
following:
- Muscle strength and identification of
imbalances
- Muscles’ ability to stabilize joints and
provide explosive power
- Joint range of motion specific to the
overhead athlete
- Endurance of specific muscle groups
Did you know?
- You are at a higher risk for shoulder
injury if the shoulder external rotator strength is less than 70% as
strong as the internal rotators
- Elite tennis players were able to
increase their tennis serve speed by 11 miles per hour with a specific
shoulder training program
- Your serving shoulder range of motion
will differ significantly from your non-serving arm

A sport specific rehabilitation program
changes your biomechanics by strengthening weak muscles and stretching
muscles prone to tightness. Focused programs give real, measurable
results. The first step is to be evaluated by a physical therapist that
specializes in the unique needs of the overhead athlete.
If injuries have already begun to affect your
game, all is not lost. We also offer rehabilitation of all sports and
orthopedic injuries.
